What this number is

A modelled estimate of ammunition manufactured worldwide in a year.

There is no global register of ammunition production. Any figure is a model built from partial industry data.

Why it matters

Ammunition output is a better measure of sustained war capacity than weapon counts.

How it is produced

Industry capacity estimates and procurement contracts, modelled to a global total.

Plato's Cave classifies this figure as MODELLED. Modelled figures are outputs of assumptions. Change the assumptions and the number moves, even when the world does not.

How to read it carefully

This entry is still showing an example figure while research reaches it. Do not cite the number — use the sources below and the framing above.

Reference period: Example period. Last checked: Placeholder.

Plato's Cave commentary

Military numbers are among the best funded statistics in the world. Governments count what they spend on weapons far more carefully than what they spend on the people the weapons are meant to protect.

That imbalance is itself the story. When a figure this large is uncontroversial, the argument is never about the data. It is about who decided the priority.
